Sometimes the reality and hassle of running a household budget catches up to us and we nee to make up the difference elsewhere. Downsizing your household can be a good place to start, but it does feel a touch worrying to do. Over time, we all tend to accumulate more than we realize, and the thought of parting with some of it can be a little much. But instead of viewing this as a failure, think of it as a change.
Perhaps you need to be more streamlined because you’ve welcomed a lovely new person into the household in the form of a bundle of joy. Thankfully, unlike downsizing a business, you won’t need to let go of any jobs here. With that in mind:
Reduce, Rehome, & Recycle
Go around your household with three stickers or colored post-it notes. One colour for throwing out, one for donating or selling, and one for recycling. Items that you no longer need don’t have to go to waste most of the time, which is great from an environmental perspective. You can donate gently used clothes, furniture, and appliances to local charities or thrift stores most of the time. Many organizations will even pick up larger items for you like sofas, but you may have to fill out a few forms. If you can, try to rehome sentimental or valuable items by giving them to friends or family who will appreciate them. This could help your household budget, but it may also make moving into a smaller home easier to do.
Reduce Your Family Car Count
If you own more than one vehicle, downsizing your household could be the perfect time to reconsider if you really need them all. Maybe the kids have moved out, or one car tends to sit idle most of the time or is mostly just used for fun Sunday drives. If you sell one, you can combine that cost into two smaller runarounds, or one major family car that can include everyone. Thankfully, selling a vehicle doesn’t have to be complicated. Platforms that let you transfer your title online make the process much simpler, which allows you to cut down on your wait while you plan everything else in tow.
3. Rethink Your Furniture & Layout
If you’re moving then considering which furniture you want to take with you is a solid start. But if you’re not, you can still downsize the internals of the house and raise some funds by selling older furniture. Start by inspecting what’s functional and fits the space you’re moving into. A sectional sofa that worked in your old living room might not suit a cozier apartment, but if you’re not moving, that vintage coffee table could be a necessary sale to keep you afloat for a while. Consider it a chance to renew your house and its decor a little, and to feel a touch more unburdened. If you rethink your furniture and layout, you begin to rethink your life more!
With this advice, you’ll be sure to downsize your household in the most responsible way.
