1. Your market is a niche one.
If you know your book is in a niche market, you might find it exceptionally difficult to find traditional publishers. Some books appeal to a lot of people but that doesn’t mean that your book shouldn’t be created in the first place. You have done some amazing work, and that means you could self-publish and print your books yourself.
2. You control the content.
When you choose to self-publish, you control everything in your book. No one is telling you what to cut or what to include, no one is telling you that you can’t publish and you get full control over the editing, too. You can appeal to a much bigger market, and you can make edits and republish as you please.
3. You get to control the packaging.
On top of having control of the actual words of your book, you also get to tailor its appearance both front and back. Most of the time, authors have very little say over how their work is packaged and you get to choose the jacket, the cover and the dedication when you do it yourself. Self-publishing allows you a huge amount of control you can’t get the traditional way.
4. It’s your money, baby!
You want to publish for the prestige but let’s not forget the other ‘P’ – profit! When you traditionally publish, you give a cut to your agent, the publisher and your editor. When you self-publish, any money you make is all yours and that’s an exciting prospect!
5. You retain all the rights.
Let’s pretend you have pushed through and self-published: you get to keep all rights to your intellectual property. You can choose to use the rights and sell them as you see fit. You can publish digitally, physically and in audio format, too. You can even choose to have foreign translations done so that you can reach the entire world!
