7 Ways to Really Take Care of Your Employees

Being a good boss and taking care of your employees isn’t just the “good” thing to do, it’s also the smart thing to do. When employees are happy, they are more productive, more loyal, and more likely to stick around if and when things get tough. So how exactly can you make sure that your team is happy? Let’s explore how to really take care of your employees now.

Create a welcoming environment

The first thing you need to do is make sure that your workspace is a welcoming environment. Really think about it – is your workplace welcoming, inclusive and a safe place to be? If the answer is no to any of those things, you need to make changes. And it’s not just as simple as adding beanbags and a pool table to the break room (although very cool) – you need to create an environment where people feel comfortable. A big part of this involves open communication. No employees should feel like they can’t speak up in fear of backlash from you or other employees. That’s why it’s important to relay that you’ve always got an open door if they want to chat to you.

Not only that, your employees are more likely to thrive if they feel like they’re a part of the team. This can be difficult for newer employees joining the “gang”, so it’s up to you to make sure they immediately feel like they’re at home. This can be achieved by getting everyone involved in group projects and team building activities. It’s amazing what an afternoon of employee bonding can do for overall morale!

Offer flexibility

The pandemic proved that people thrive when they’re given a little more flexibility, and it’s something you should consider too. Whether you allow people to work remotely or give them more flexible hours, it can really help your employees’ well-being. Not only will they be able to fit their working hours around other commitments, but they’ll also be able to schedule time for rest and relaxation too. Now, we understand that not every business has the capability of allowing people to work remotely. However, allowing people to have as much flexibility as possible with their hours will really show that you value your employees’ time and well-being.

Be appreciative

If you’ve ever been an employee anywhere, there’s a good chance you’ve left work feeling overworked and underappreciated. When this happens, motivation levels drop and you no longer feel like going above and beyond for your employer. The funny thing is, it doesn’t take much to show your employees how much you appreciate them! It might sound a bit basic, but it’s as simple as saying “thank you” to your employees. It really will go a long way! You can also show appreciation by giving shoutouts in meetings or celebrating milestones like early project completion or even personal achievements. If you really want to go above and beyond, you can give cards or offer to pay for a work’s lunch as a way of marking people’s achievements. It won’t go unnoticed!

Prioritise their well-being

Your employees might look well in themselves, but well-being involves their mental and emotional health too. While working through a break to hit a deadline isn’t a bad thing, you should also be the one encouraging your team to take breaks from their work too. An overworked and tired mind isn’t going to produce the best results! You should also consider providing wellness perks like gym memberships, chaplain support, and even healthy snacks in the office break room. Giving employees the ability to really look after themselves will show that you care about their well-being, which will also be very appreciated by them too.

Provide growth opportunities

While you will have employees come and go, the last thing you want is for your employees to feel like they’re stuck in a dead end job. That’s why you should consider offering growth opportunities to show them that you’re just as invested in their future as they are. And there’s so many things you can do too! Training programs are a great place to start, whether it’s upskilling workshops or industry certifications – your employees will love the chance to learn and earn another certification. Not only that, you should also actually look at the skills your employees currently have. For example, you might have hired someone to grow your social media profiles, but they might have a large wealth of knowledge about SEO. This means that if you need to hire someone to optimise your website, you should consider promoting from within rather than hiring someone new.

Listen to feedback

Another way of taking care of employees is by giving them a chance to provide you with feedback. You should be having regular check-ins with each employee to monitor projects they’re undertaking and to discuss anything else that might be relevant. In these meetings, encourage employees to give their feedback. And, make sure you act on it too! Alternatively, you could keep feedback cards and a box in the office to give people the chance to submit things anonymously should they wish. Communicate with your employees to let them know what you’re doing with that feedback and if you can’t take action on a suggestion, explain why. They will appreciate your honesty and most importantly, know that they’ve been heard.

Make work fun!

All work and no play makes for a very dull day indeed. We all know how stressful work can be from time to time, so why not throw some fun into the mix? It could be a weekly time slot where everyone stops what they’re doing and has the chance to sit together and have a coffee without any shop talk. Or you could consider giving a different person control over what music the office listens to for half an hour each day. Or, it could even be something as wild as throwing a ball around the office. Let people suggest things here too! It will give a huge sense of inclusivity and allow people to blow off some steam before going back to focus mode!
