Your Home Is Always Cold: What’s Going On?

Homes are supposed to be comfortable, peaceful, and well-crafted places where you can drop everything and just relax! You handpicked the decor, you put the wallpaper up yourself, and you scattered as many cushions as possible. And yet, your home is always cold and has this weird chill in the air. You’ve tried to heat it up, time and time again, but it’s never quite kept the right temperature for longer than an hour or two. And this isn’t even just in winter! Even when we’re deep into the summer season, your house is just never as hot as anyone else’s.

So what’s going on here? Let’s dig into the problem and (hopefully!) finally find the solution.

You’ve Got More Than One Heat Leak

Even if you plug up one, there could be another (or 5) hiding elsewhere in your home. And when you’ve got one heat leak or air gap to deal with, there’s a very strong chance it isn’t the only one.

Have a search around your house the next time you get a moment. All you need is a bit of patience to go from room to room and feel along the walls, as well as the floor and ceiling edges.

While you’re at it, double check the windows have been properly sealed into place as well.

Your Attic Might Not Be Insulated

Your walls are, and your windows and doors have thick glazing to them, but your attic could be letting the side down here.

Attic insulation plays a bigger role than you’d think. It’s one of the largest portions of your home (the roof), and hot air tends to rise. If your attic doesn’t have the right level of insulation, that heat is going to pass straight up and through it.

It’s worth calling out some attic insulation services and getting them to take a look. You want to be sure you’re working with the right level of layering and padding, so a professional eye is indispensable.

The Central Heating Needs Fixing

Central heating systems can be quite sneaky in the way they break down. You won’t always know something is wrong straight away; it could be a couple months before it becomes clear.

After all, if it breaks down in the summer (when you’re already barely using it), you’re not going to notice the issue until you start trying to warm your home again in autumn. And even then, if the house is a bit on the chilly side, it isn’t all that out of the ordinary!

If the central heating hasn’t been serviced in a while, check when the last one occurred and see if there’s any note been left for when the next one should happen. If it’s past due, get a service booked ASAP.

When your home is always cold, it’s usually either the way it’s been sealed or something iffy with the heating! Double check both.
