Parental Procrastinations: 7 Essential Tasks That Parents Put Off

Many parents are constantly battling their way through to-do lists, which can lead to certain tasks being put off. While some of these tasks aren’t important, others can be essential. Below are seven examples of tasks that parents commonly end up procrastinating on.

Starting a college fund

If your child is very young, college might still seem like a lifetime away. You may not even be certain that your child will go to college. However, it can be worth setting up a college fund early just in case. This can reduce your child’s reliance on student debt if they do decide to pursue higher education. If they decide college isn’t for them, then the money can still help set them up for adulthood.

Writing a will

While many of us have no plans of dying any time soon, unexpected tragedies can occur. Having a will in place can allow you to choose exactly which loved ones will receive which assets. It’s recommended that all parents have a will in place. A local solicitor for will writing can help you to create this will.

Taking out life insurance

Not got any assets to leave behind to your kids? You can still set up a life insurance scheme, which will pay them a life sum or installments upon your death. This ensures that you kids receive something when you pass and could also help pay for funeral costs.

Decluttering

Having kids means that you will naturally accumulate a lot of clutter over the years. This includes clothes that they have grown out of, toys they no longer play with and baby/school equipment they no longer need. Taking the time to periodically declutter can prevent all this stuff piling up. Don’t just shove it in the attic and plan to sort it out later – eventually you may run out of space, and dealing with it will be an overwhelming task.

Scheduling dental appointments

Looking after your children’s teeth involves making sure that they do for regular dental check-ups. This is something that many parents put off because dental appointments often have to be made during school hours. Even if you think your child’s teeth are healthy, it’s always worth seeing a dentist occasionally to make sure there are no hidden problems – catching them early can stop them turning into major issues.

Teaching kids life skills

One day your kids will be adults and they will need to know how to cook, clean and manage their own money. If you kids are still very young, you don’t have to worry about teaching these life skills now. But as they get older, it could be important to start thinking about some basic cooking lessons, teaching them how to use the washing machine or encouraging them to save up pocket money for things they want. Don’t wait until they’re ready to move out!

Pursuing your own life goals

Don’t forget about your own life goals. You deserve to still chase career dreams or learn new skills or develop hobbies. Schedule time for yourself every week to work on your own goals.
