Thailand Travel Guide For The Ultra-Adventurous

Thailand fashioned itself as the premier tourist hub of Southeast Asia. It has everything that you could want, including:

  • low prices
  • fancy hotels
  • beautiful weather
  • kind people

In this post, we run through everything you need to know as an adventurous person who wants to explore Thailand in all of its glory. Whether you’re looking to solo dive in the deep waters of the sea, or go on jungle treks, this guide is here to help you. We look at everything you need to know.

The best time to go

The best time to go to Thailand is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. Temperatures are hot in Thailand all year because it is so close to the equator, but when it is dry, it makes hiking, climbing, and water-based activities more fun. If you want cooler temperatures, you’ll have to go to the northern parts of the country, which can be quite remote and difficult to get to.

During November, it’s a good idea to visit the Andaman Sea and go to the Gulf side, which includes Koh Tao and Koh Samui. During the shoulder months of April to June and October, you’ll find fewer crowds but also the weather isn’t always as good. You may have to put up with wetter conditions, and some activities could be rained off.

Essential planning tips

Before you set off to Thailand on an adventurous holiday, you’ll need to plan properly. You’ll want to have a base, such as a hotel in Sukhumvit. A little bit of luxury goes a long way when you’re spending all of your time outdoors.

If you’re going climbing, caving, or on jungle treks, take a guide with you. Find somebody who understands the local area and conditions and can navigate you through it safely.

When it comes to safety equipment, make sure you have all the helmets, harnesses, and life jackets that you need. Check the qualifications of any guides and ensure that you learn emergency protocols if you get into trouble. If you can afford comprehensive travel insurance, use it. Travel insurers will often protect you against medical costs even if you’re planning risky activities on land or in the water.

Also, be practical. Make sure that you book popular tourist attractions in advance, learn basic Thai phrases so that you can call for help or get assistance when you need it. Be sure to bring sunglasses, hats and mosquito repellent with you, especially if you’re traveling for a long time outside.
