Tips for Keeping on Top of Your Mental Health

You’ll hear it everywhere about how important your mental health is and that’s because it really is. Over the years we have learnt a lot more about mental health and the benefits of looking after it. When your mental health is low, your day is going to be a lot harder than if your mental health is at an all-time high.

Life in general, you are going to have highs and lows, but when you are in a low period, this is when you should be looking after your mental health and prioritizing the things that help it, such as enjoying your hobbies, getting plenty of sleep, eating well, and speaking out to your loved ones.

To help you keep on top of your mental health, below is our guide on three different ways to help your mental health. Keep on reading to learn more.

Reduce alcohol, smoking and substances

Alcohol and smoking are both widely known to affect your brain negatively. They can both cause you to feel anxious as well as tired, stressed and lethargic. We often say to people who enjoy drinking to try and do it in moderation and to cut out smoking altogether (although we understand this can be hard). Substance abuse is also another thing that can really bring you down and destroy your positive mental health. If you need help with substances, there is an affordable intensive outpatient program that you can sign up for which are there to help.

Get plenty of sleep

It’s recommended you get around 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day as a minimum. How many hours do you manage? Many people struggle to sleep the recommended amount, even though this has been proven to have a negative impact on your health if you don’t, especially your mental health. Lack of sleep can cause you to feel more stressed, struggle at work and feel very tired. You can get very ill if you don’t get enough sleep.

Enjoy your hobbies

Hobbies are important for many aspects of your life, with one of them being your mental health. Having hobbies gives you a chance to meet other like-minded people. It also gives you a break from everyday stresses and something to test your mind with. A hobby can be anything that you enjoy. Some people like board games, some people like cocktail-making and some people like playing a musical instrument and performing in a band.

We hope our guide has given you some useful pointers on ways of keeping on top of your mental health. As you can imagine, there are so many different things you can do to help yourself.
