4 Things Therapy Can Help You With

Seeing a therapist can be very healing for many people. This is because they can help hold space for emotions, feelings, and thoughts that would otherwise be overwhelming. Indeed, as well as being a more general support in your life, there are things therapy can help you with. Find out what they are below.

Getting out of an abusive relationship

Did you know that those in abusive relationships often have repeated tries to break free before they can do so? There are so many different types of abusive relationships as well including romantic ones, ones between family members, and even between friends.

Fortunately, finding a therapist who is well-versed in dealing with the things that an abusive relationship comes with like gaslighting, financial control, physical and sexual violence and coercion can help. Indeed by gaining a greater understanding of the things we are going through as well as getting input from a healthy outsider, it can often become much clearer that we are in a relationship that we need to leave.

Anxiety disorders

Another issue that a good therapist can help you with is anxiety disorder like GAD, Panic disorder, PTSD or OCD. Anxiety disorders can be very scary for those experiencing them and have a marked impact on their life and mood. Fortunately, many people can make excellent progress in better coping with their anxiety disorder and living their lives if they find a good therapist who offers the correct treatment.

For example, the recommended treatment for OCD is CBT with ERP, while the recommended treatment for PTSD is EMDR or eye movement desensitization therapy. Remember that it’s important to educate yourself on the correct treatment before you begin therapy because in this way you can maximize your chances of recovery.

Depression & Suicidal ideation

Depression and suicidal ideation are not the same, but they are often linked as the former can lead to the latter in some cases. If you look at the definition of Depression it is a period of feeling low that has persisted over 2 weeks. While suicidal ideation is the process of having thoughts about the possibility of committing suicide.

Seeing a therapist can be helpful for those suffering from depression, suicidal ideation and both because it can provide an outlet for the worries and thoughts that are repeating in their mind. Additionally, good therapy can provide access to treatments such as medication and hospital stays when such conditions are particularly bad. Lastly, therapy as in every other case can help the person suffering from these conditions address the thought and behavior patterns that cause them, offering hope and a clear path to recovery.

If you are currently feeling suicidal and need immediate support please call the suicide hotline in your area.

Grieving

Losing someone we love can cause a huge amount of grief to well up in our lives. Grief can be a devastating emotion to deal with too, especially when it’s further complicated by guilt, anxiety and depression. However, seeing a therapist can offer much-needed relief for those experiencing grief because it provides a safe space in which to talk about everything that comes along with losing a loved one, both good and bad.
